undercoating
Rust encapsulator is good stuff. I applied part of it with a brush and also sprayed some places too. And it is less expensive than POR-15 and just as effective. The red color matches pretty close. Like I said, I had nearly 90% of the original red oxide still left on mine. I was hard to even scratch it. Once I got it cleaned, I almost just left it alone but I went an extra step. I did not sand because, well, it is the under side of the car it is going to get dirty. I also had to paint part of the underside that was noticable with semi black. Otherwise the red sticks out.

It will not crack unless applied too thickly.....which can be an issue when people are unfarmilliar with paint products!! There can be a mentality where if some is good, more must be better, it does not always work that way with paint/primer, etc.

No, red oxide is like a paint. Well, actually more like a primer. It doesn't get old and crack.
Here, read about it.

Check out the link I gave you for a price. You just brush it on, or spray it on if you have an air pump and paint nozzle/wand. It is most effective with new steel metal, but you can clean up your existing steel and treat it with the red oxide. Ford used it at some plants, but not all. If I remember correctly the Metuchen, NJ plant did not use it, but I guess that is a moot point. It is a good product to use just like POR 15.

Well, yeah.....I suppose you have a thin argument point there, but that stuff is not thick enough to put on too thickly. Unless you put on 5 or 6 coats. What idiot would do that?

are you sure you want to ask that question??

It was a very good surfacer it sanded down nice and smooth, without lots of effort...
I have the exact problem Soaring described, the undercoating is cracking and starting to rust underneath. I removed the undercoating in a small area with some chemical stripper - not a good idea. Took a long time to setup and then didn't really work great. Starting this weekend, its a heat gun with some putty knives.
