Default 67 Radiator question

I want to replace the old 2 row radiator in my son's 67 289 V8. I've read many posts stating a 3 row copper/brass will cool it just fine. Can I just pick up a 3 row radiator from any auto part store? As long as they have the make and year of the car, it should fit.....right? Also the fan shroud looks like it was hit by the fan and has some scrapes and cracks in it. I'm assuming it was the wrong size to begin with.Should I stick with a Mustang parts store/supplier to make sure what I get will fit? Or since I'm not going with an aluminum radiator, I can go to any local auto parts store?

Yeah, most likely. Just make sure you get one with the bottom and top hose on the passenger's side. The rad should not be thicker than 3" nor taller than 19".I don't think there were shrouds from the factory in that year,so most likely it will be an aftermarket part. Most Mustang vendors carry them.

Personally, I'd just call National Parts Depot and get one that you know fits a 67 Mustang. I think their shipping is free (or maybe a slight fee for oversize shipment) but I did just buy a Griffin Aluminum from them and shipping was real cheap, showed up in 2 days....

I did a similar thing with my '66 a few years ago. Since it was new, the car has always running hot according to the temperature gauge in the cluster (can you guess where this is going?). Even after the new HD radiator from NPD, it still ran hot. Finally, I found a vintage NOS mechanical temp gauge, and installed it in place of the factory sender switch (I fabbed up a mount for the gauge at the base of the steering column). Guess what? The car runs perfectly at 160* most of the time, with slightly higher temps depending upon driving conditions. Problem solved.

I have found that NPD has great customer service. Other Mustang suppliers can also get you the right radiator for your needs.
