Default Stupid question about fuel filter

Have a 1965 mustang with original 289 and 2v carb. I went to autozone and asked for a replacement fuel filter. What they gave me looked no where close to what I have. Can I use any inline fuel filter? What do I need to get?

I using a filter made for fuel injection as i have not had good luck with the clear plastic ones that have the paper elements in them. The fuel injection ones are suppost to have better filtration. I have not had a problem with it starving for fuel (as a result of the fuel filter).

I really dont know what to recommend but so far this filter i have has been working great.

I use a fuel filter on my 66 that is gold in color, and screws directly into the carb, with rubber tubing to fit it to the metal fuel line. in addition, i have one of those clear ones lower on the line, just to see if theres any crap in the line. when my buddy from school suggested using two filters, it sounded ridiculous, but i haven't noticed any lack of performance or the carb starving for gas.

Does your fuel filter look like this pic of a "cannister" style or is this what they were showing you at the part's store?

That's the style on my '65 6 cyl, and it's easy to change the inner filter element.

ok, so my digital camera is done. my 18 month old thought it would be fun to drop it in her baby pool. In addition to a new fuel filter, looks like i will need a new camera. Great.

Took a closer look at my fuel filter and its definitely an inline filter, a metal cannister hooked up after the fuel pump. There is not one integrated into the fuel pump. After cleaning up the outside, I was able to read some markings. It indicated it was "Hastings" and what I think was model "GF-9". I looked on the internet and couldn't find this particular one. Can anyone recommend what part number or what I should be asking for from Autozone? Sorry, I'm a complete newb and dont want to mess up my car.
