Stupid question about fuel filter

ok, so here's where I'm at... these questions may seem stupid to u guys, but I've never worked on a car before so I don't want to mess it up. There is no integrated screw on filter on the fuel pump... from the fuel pump, a rubber hose runs into a fuel filter, then this rubber hose is coupled with some type of metal hose, which is screwed directly into the carb. There is no fuel filter screwed into the carb.
Here's what I'm thinking of doing.... replacing the current fuel lines from the fuel pump to the car with a new fuel line and screw in fuel filter in the carb. Couple questions though:
1. Is there any benefit of having a bigger fuel filter connected above the pump or is a screw in filter in the carb sufficient?
2. If I replace the fuel line, which diameter tubing should I use? I would be putting in an original type screw in filter.
3. Currently, there is metal tubing from the carb fuel inlet... will i still need this or can I run rubber tubing directly from the fuel pump to the fuel filter that will be screwed directly into the carb? My concern, not sure if it should be one, is that a rubber hose sitting pretty close to a hot engine with fuel in it might not be a good idea. Am i right, or am I a dope?
BTW, I have an autolite with the original tag on it... it says C5ZF, but I didnt have a chance to read the other numbers to figure out exactly which Autolite it is.
Fellas, thanks for your help... I have learned a lot from these forums.

Yeah, don't run rubber hose all the way to the carb from the FP its kind of dangerous, steel tubing is the way to go. If the setup you're using now looks safe, just replace the fuel filer with a like kind. You can always put the filter on the inlet side of the FP also so that you could mount it on the fender apron with some sort of bracket. Lots of possibilities.
Here's a shot of how it's supposed to look.

RE: Stupid question about fuel filter
To be honest the way mine was set up (back when it was 2bl original) was that I had a metal fuel line going from pump until right in front of my power steering and then it turned to rubber and I had an inline filter there and then the rubber hose ran up to the screw in carb filter. As far as diameter just go to the store and get a rubber hose that will fit over the screw in and inline filter (If you wish to have both) I just used a hose with an inside diameter just slightly larger than the metal tubing.
