Default Speaker installation in fastback

Did Ford only install one speaker in the '69 Mach 1's? The only speaker mount I can find in mine is the one in the dash. I thought that the kick panels would have a housing for speakers, but they just have the vents. Right now, there is a big piece of posterboard acting as a shelf between the rear seat and window, with two speakers mounted onto it. It sounds and looks like crap, so I'd like to get rid of it, but don't know where or how else to get speakers in there. Can I just replace the vented kick panels with panels that will hold speakers? Am I looking at a custom installation here? Thx...

Another stock location is in the front doors, though you can't get more the 4x6's in there. Then cover up with repro 'stereo' grills that screw into the metal, requires trimming of door panels. Leave the kick panels alone, not enough room there. You might use your shelf for 6x9's mostly for bass.

This is what I tried in my '69 Shelby with fold down rear seats. I put a couple of 4 x 6's in the doors and put stock covers over them (although I considered just cutting behind the carpet in the door pannel to leave the door completely stock from the outside as per my build sheet). Second, I made a speaker box for the back with wire running under the door sill plate. This way I can remove the box and tuck the wire and look completely stock.

Theres no stock location in the door either, tho I wish there was. I might just have to cut part of the door out to fit a speaker in there, and then cover it up with the carpet. I'm not too concerned with getting subs in there. I can always just throw a box with 2 10's in the trunk (although EVERYTHING is going to rattle)...I main concern was finding a spot to mount my midrange speakers.

Are you sure? It may not look correct, but the stock door speaker was an oddball size, very long in the horizontal, like 4x8. I used a foam speaker baffle to fill the void of the 4x6 and had to drill new holes...below the window crank area.

Are you sure about the kick panel? I put aftermarket speaker kick panels in my 65 coupe and they work just fine. I can't imagine the 69 FB having smaller kick panels.

The vent takes up most of it...did not want to cut into it for a little bitty 4" speaker.
