Default Open Headers??

So how horrible would it be to run open headers for the first couple of weeks of my 351w's life? I dont know if I am going to have the money to put the full exhaust on when I drop the motor, so i can either run open headers for a little bit, or put the stock manifolds back on with the Y pipe and single cherry bomb dunping under the passenger side.I dont want to put the manifolds back on because the bolts are a biotch to get at in the car.. The long tubes will be much easier..

Oh, and the pipe is broken apart just past the Y so I will have to get it patched back together to actually have the entire thing work.. So who ran open headers for a week or two,, any disadvantages on a new motor other than how darned loud it will be??

I've done for a few days with my 289 years ago until I got to the muffler shop for pipes. VERY loud but fun. The fun wears off after you get a headache from it.

my headers did have purple hornies on them a small muffler like a cherry bomb that bolted to the header it would ring my ears. its up to you id leave the old cast iron manifolds on tell i could afford the rest of the exhaust.

Look at it this way. It's been down for over a month now, right? What's another two weeks. The other things are, your neighbors will be pissed at you, and the CHP will love you. If you get ticketed, it will cost you money to pay a possible fine or cost to take a day off from work. Their goes that new exhaust system

You've never heard how loud open headers are have you? Cops know enough to write you a ticket for noise ordinance violation.

Yes, obviously you have no idea how loud open headers are. And at least here in Cali, by law you HAVE to have a muffler of some type in a good state of repair. They don't even have to ticket you for being too loud(though they would), they could just ticket you for not havinga muffler

If you have a welder you could buy a couple of bent pipes at Pep Boys and weld or your old glasspack and buy one more for a temporary fix,,, it would be kinda easy. I almost did that today, but I decided tojust bite the bullet andhookup the exhaust that we are using.

I actually had the glasspacks in my hand today, but I decided to put them back...

you could probably even rig up some (temporary) glasspacks by just using clamps... no welding, if you have long tube headers, Checker had some that will bolt directly to the header flange collector...

I had open headers on my 289 for 1 day and it was LOUD!!! But also consider if its somewhat cold out at night and all you have is open headers.....when you shut it off some of that cold air might do damage to the motor (bent valve??) or so I've been told......just something to consider
