why
I just decoded my vin in my year one catalog and it says that I have an A code car which means that it should be a 4 barrel carb. Yet when I received the car It had a two barrel carb. I never thought anything of the 2 barrels. Knew that I was going to rebuild the motor any ways but I cant understand why any one would want to de tune a V8 like that.
I dont know if it is origional or not. Is there a number on the block that corresponds to the cars Vin? It looks like it has different pistons. A few weeks ago someone was looking for a 289 piston and they thought that mine might already be over bored.
would the stock heads be different from a 2 barrel to a 4. I want to put alluminum heads but wont have the money for them for a long time. I was thinking about putting the stock heads on when I build the motor to get the car mobile again then I was going to replace them at a later date. If the 2 barrel heads arent worth a damn I will have to change my plans around and put off building the motor until last.
It's to my understanding that there really is no way to confirm if the current engine you have is what originally came in the car. However, there is such a thing as period correctness- this is why people get interested in date codes. That way they can match an engine and it's components to their car. It's possible that someone swapped out the original 4V goods for 2V stuff as a cost saver, at that time. Most people, especially when repairing a car, have an overwhelming sense of immediacy and lack patience. There are endless amounts of possibilities as to why you have the 2V. However, rest assure that you can get your A code back to A CODE status with minimal amount of parts surfing- you find many 4V intakes on ebay. As for the heads, this has been a long debated topic as some feel that the 4V heads have smaller chambers, etc. than 2V heads. My research tells me that there is NO difference- unless of course HiPo heads are in question (which is a 4V head).
BUT, if you're not concerned with original, you can always go with edelbrock intakes, etc. What are you planning with your car?

It is a full on resto mod. I have been so preoccupied with the body that I have completely neglected the motor. I dont know where the engine is going so far. I have tossed the idea of a blower but have made no decision as of yet. I figured I would cross that hurdle when I get the car back on its wheels. Once I get the undercarriage like I want I am going to start tackling the body work. Now the car is on its side so I have plenty of room to work but when I put it back on the ground My garage will be cramped so that was when i was going to send the block off to the machine shop.
There is no debate on the heads. C and A code engines got the same head castings. The only casting difference in the K code heads is the valve spring lip. Same combustion chamber size, same ports. The chamber variances show up when you start looking at different casting years.
If you pull the date code off the block, you can at least get an idea if it's period correct. It'll start with a C, D, or E, ie' C6OE for a 1966 casting, or D0OE for a 1970 casting.

Hunting parts are a pain. When I first got my A code, I checked the numbers on the intake and it said, according to the part number, that it was made for a galaxie or something. I was freaked out as I thought my car was completely original. I came to find out that Ford started to through everything into these cars to keep up with the demand. If you're car is a 66, certainly you'll find some C5OE- _ _ _ _ parts in your car- don't sweat it.
Really consider what you're going to do with your car. So many people put far too much into their car to where they don't enjoy it. A friend of mine put $45K into his 62 Impala. One day we were driving done a rough road and he was concerned about the springs in the seats cushions. Please, build to enjoy!

My block says C5AE-6015E.What does this mean? As for the car I have more fun working on it than driving. It will be my wifes DD when I am done. I told her I dont care if we sell it after because I will be getting another project shortly after completion. Of course I want to try to show it a couple times to see how good I do.
