Default Regristration question

I'm getting my 68 from my uncle this weekend and need a little help if any of you can. Background: My uncle lives in Michigan, bought the car two years ago but never registered the car. The previous owner signed off on the title and gave my uncle a receipt for the car. I live in North Carolina and I'm having the car shipped to me (will be here Saturday). How do I go about registering the car since it hasn't been done in my uncles name? Will there be penalties to pay for not having it done in Michigan or can I just sign the title (it would be like my uncle never owned it)? Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance.

This kind of thing varies from state to state. Did your uncle sign the title when he bought the car?

no, he never signed. I figure I'll have to call the DMV but just don't know what to expect.
