Default msd on a 351

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I need for an MSD ignition for a 351. I have been told that I dont need the control box and that I can do it with just a new coil and distributor. Any help? Thanks.

dizzy + ignition box + coil = spark

for the record, crane ignition > msd..... they are the same price and the crane stuff has better features and excellent build quality

It sounds like you are looking for an MSD Ready-To-Run distributor. I have the traditional MSD box and dizzy but would go with the Ready-To-Run if I were to do it again. They are not cheap BTW.

yeah,I noticed how "cheap" they are But crane huh? Any suggestions on a place to buy them? Yeah, I was looking at the ready to run stuff. I priced putting on older modle's electronic ignition, but by the time I got everything I needed, I was at the same price of an MSD.

If you're looking to do it on the "cheap", Ebay has knockoff Ready-To-Runs for 1/3rd the price. Obviously, they are not designed and made in the USA and there are probably other reasons they are cheaper as well (no R&D costs ), but budgets sometimes are part of the equation too.

No, I dont want to go cheap. I just meant I know how pricey they are. I really dont want to go cheap. I had my mind set on msd, but 77stang is talking about crane stuff. So I'm back at ground zero.

FWIW, I don't see any Crane ready-to-run dizzys on Summit's website. Maybe I'm missing something. If you want something a bit cheaper, Pertronix has one for $240. It has an iron gear which will work if you have a flat tappet cam.

You can also get a Summit brand (usually a re-branded major manufacturer product) for about the same. So many choices ...

I have the MSD ready to run dizzy, and a Mallory Promaster coil and have no problems. I am gonna eventually get a MDS blaster coil, but I have other priorities at the moment. But to answer your question, I have no control box.

Just make sure when you swap out the dizzy, you mark the position of the rotor AND the dizzy. Not to hard to fix if you screw it up, just cost you some time. Wonder how I know that[&o]

not exactly the cheapest thing out there, but its kick ***. just read this....

"27 electronically programmed "mechanical" advance curves and three electronically programmed "vacuum" advance curves, plus the "zero" position that provides an advance lockout for crank trigger ignitions. A built-in precision MAP sensor, a race-proven optical trigger for precise firing and reliability, and accuracy to +/- .5 degrees at all rpm levels are all added bonuses from Crane."

all that equals an awsome dizzy. match it up with a

which can be bought here: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=sku

and finally this: http://www.cranecams.com/?show=brows...umber=730-0092

600.00 later and you have probably the best setup you could ever want for a street performance ignition

That sounds pretty bitchin, actually.

I run an MSD ready-to-run without a box (box is an easy add later) and it works great. Very easy to change advance curves, and it looks pretty snazzy too
