Clutch Question 4speed Toploader
I have a 65 mustang with a 4 speed toploader and I will be dropping in a 347 stroker motor. I already have a 10.5 clutchfrom a T-5 Transand was wondering if it will work with the toploader? What else will I need? i've read that I might need the newer sytle clutch forkof the T-5 trans? Any help is great!! Thanks
I believe they're the same, but not ultra sure on that. You shouldn't need a different clutch fork, and I don't think the T5 one works in an older bellhousing anyway.
What kind of clutch do you have? With the power a 347 is going to be putting out, you should probably think about upgrading to something with more grabbing power, ie Centerforce, etc. Or even going back to the old three-finger (aka 'long') style Boss302 clutch.

Its a 6 puck design its in my 88 mustang right now 457 HP to the crank with no problems. The 65 has a Zoom kevlairclutch that fits the 289 but not sure if it would fit the 347 flywheel. Thats why I was just gonna use the clutch setup thats in the 88 mustang.

Is the 347 a 50 oz or 28 oz? The 10.5" clutch needs a 5.0 flywheel so that the bolt pattern lines up. These come in both the 50 oz and 28 oz verity. Be warned the 28 oz ones are more expensive than the 50 sense a 50 can be gotten from a junkyard and the 28 oz need to be purchased new from a specialty company or be a rebalance stock 50 oz. The 10.5 inch clutch will work however the throw distance on the pressure plate is different than a standard classic Mustang pressure plate, so you will need to mess with your linkage so that you do not over extend the fingers on the 10.5" clutch. Basically the T5 bell housing and corresponding linkage actuates the pressure plate with less travel than an early stile clutch fork and corresponding pressure plate.
You'll need to convert to a hydraulic or cable clutch linkage. You won't get enough throw with the z-bar style linkage and the clutch won't completely disengage. I'm using a late model 10" clutch in mine with a Toploader and have hydraulic. I dunno if anyone makes a cable bracket for a 4spd though. Otherwise, if you use a good clutch it should be fine.

I thought you could use the newer style release fork and bearing to solve that problem?
