347 stroker
My 289 is tired, over 200,000 miles on it without a rebuild, still runs like a top but it doesnt have the power it did and im afraid to step on it because of the leaky gaskets. I found a place that sells rebuild kits for the 289 but then i also realized they sell crate engines. I priced the rebuild at about $3000, their long block crate engine are at $2800. Ive always wanted a 347 stroker am seriously considering buying it. I know ill need a new harmonic balancer, flywheel, and what not. but what else is required to convert a 289 car to a 302 (347). My edelbrock performer intake and carb will just bolt right onto it and ill buy headers to go into my new exhaust. What else will i need to convert?
Depending on the balance of the stroker, you may or may not need to change the ballancer and flywheel. Most everything will bolt up. There might be issues with the oil pan and oil pump on a already built stroker, because many of these are constructed for Fox bodied cars, (rear sump). If so your pan should fit, and an oil pump pickup will need to be purchased and installed.
The engine may not have the front mounted dipstick, if not the timing cover will need to be drilled or replaced in order to accept one.
As far as I know, everything else should be cool.

it comes equipped with an oil pump, i dont know if an oil pump pickup is the same thing or not. and im not sure if it comes with a timing cover, it doesnt include a water pump but those are cheep enough, with the bell housing from my c4 fit the engine block? I might as well just buy a new oil pan instead of the gunked up old one.

what about my engine wiring harness? get a new one?

ok thanks alot, yea my question was compatibility, the reason i went with a 302 not 351 is becuase i figured it would be more compatable with what i have. just wanted to double check everything.
I just did this same swap from my tired 289 to a new 347 in my 67 convertible....you've covered everything, couple other things to keep in mind:
1) Strokers run hot, I put in a new Griffin Aluminum radiator and a better fan, still belt driven though. I run even cooler now than my 289 ever ran...sweet!
2) Rebuild the C4. You're gonna need to do the whole upgrade thing, clutches, bands, servo, planetary, shift kit of choice.
3) What are your new engine's cam specs gonna be? Chances are, strokers like high lift cams, so you prolly need a new Torque converter. I went with the TCI Breakaway as the cam in my 347 required a 2500 stall....
4) Rear end gearing: What are your rear end gears? I kept my 8 inch for now and so far so good, but had to go from stock 2.73s to 3.55s...
5) Put a nice 7 qt oil pan on this new engine...
6) Headers...
7) Carb- 650 or 670CFM
8) Brakes- stock manual drums are gonna be scary (In my opinion) to stop a car with a 347, consider power discs
9) Suspension- front and rear: make sure you're good all around- shocks, springs, control arms, steering parts, ball joints...
good luck!!!! Its quite a difference in performance....I went from stock 289 with 200HP when new to probably 425-450HP....I would actually put my #8 and #9 as first priority if they aren't new already...

FYI you should be able to use the oil pump pickup tube from your 289 just fine, along with your oil pan from the 289. yes, a high capacity pan is nice, but unless your planning on holding the thing at 6,000 rpms or above its really not needed (seriously).
your performer intake and edlebrock carb will work, but that intake (and im guessing carb if its a 600) is a bit undersized for what your doing IMO. i would look into the wieand action plus or a edelbrock performer rpm/rpm airgap.
oh yeah, and you can get good heads for around 1k, a forged stroker kit for 1k, and all block machine work and extras for 1k. so, for the same price as the crate motor you can surely build one with even more power and have control over which parts are used in your motor.
