Hurdles to run bigger wheels?
Hey all, just curious to know if there are any hurdles that I should expect if I decide to run 18" wheels on my 66' coupe. It still currently has the 4-wheel drum setup, which may change in the near future or may not. The suspension is totally stock also.
I thought I remembered reading somewhere that there were some minor mods that needed to be made in order to run 18" or larger wheels, but I could be mistaking.
Thanks!
Cory

My son put 17s on his car and it has kind of been a bitch,,,, I would think long and hard about those 18s.
I am thinking that 16s would be the ticket.
Not saying that you can't "make the 18s work", but you will have to make them work...

Out of what I know rotational weight should be kept to a minimum and when I think of 17" rims I think of more metal/weight giving you more rotational weight thus slowing your car down... Also larger wheels will slow your down due to it changing the ratio of engine speed to vehicle speed and if you have put lower gears in your rear end then the larger wheels will nullify the benefit you would get from the lower gear ratio... So I ask, why do larger wheels?
Larger wheels are more of a cosmetic factor for us. Also, there will be no speedometer change or gear ratio change, because the radius of the factory wheel/tire combo can be matched by using an 18" wheel with the appropriate tire size. So rolling diameter will remain the same.
This car is a restomod, and is not staying original. We have daily drivers for that. We are looking for more of the street rod/hot rod custom look. I am a minitrucker so big wheels and air suspension are all I know anyway. My wife and I would like some of that same flavor to carry over into our Mustang project.

First you need to put front disc brakes, personaly Ihave 15's on my 65 , if I were you I would'nt go any bigger ,because 90 percent of the time those big wheels on a Classic Mustang does'nt look very good especially on a 65 or 66 . But thats my personal opinnion , take it for what it's worth , our own preforance. If you know what I mean
