I don't know about the 6R but the AOD will drop right in. You will need an AOD sepcific crossmember, and then corrisponding pressure plate, starter, and torque converter, as well as you may need to modify the shifter linkage. I put an aod in my 62 galaxie and people put aods in classic Mustangs all the time. Mr. Classic EFI from this forum also has an aod in his car, so he should be able to give you more details.

I've swapped out the AOD for an AODE/W(W is for wide ratio gear set)
The E is a later production version of the AOD with all the weak points eliminated. E also stands for electronic, because it's computer controled. The added cost of fitting a puter(BaumannatorTCS) is made up for by not needing the upgrades, and the wide ratio gear set is Da Bomb!
Read up on these links, lotsa good AOD info there too, and if your interested & have questions Please fell free to ask.

All this is a little more expensive than a junk yard AOD, but well worth it.

mines a aode i say its a aod so i dont get the whats a aode.daze is right once you buy all the parts it bolts in and is great on the highway run at 65mph at a lower rpm depending on your rear gear ratio.you sure its not a 4r70w i never heard of a aode-w tell now i know they both look dead alike just the 4r70w has wider gear raitos.if you get a used aod have it rebuilt with a shift kit and a deeper pan stock they are slush boxes.

The 4R70W and AODE, are pretty much the same tranny, both are developments of the AOD, anduse electronic sensor inputs, where
the AOD uses hydraulic sensors. In fact the only thing making the AODE different from a 4R70,is it usingthe same tail shaft housing as an AOD. The 4R70/W tail shaft housing is different in that it has a larger diameter opening for its transmission yoke to fit into. (4R70W yoke wont fit AOD/AODE housing) Remember the W stands for the wide ratio gear set, in either tranny.
The benefit to getting theE version, or doing the simple tailshaft housing swap on a 4R70W and make itan AODE/W, is you are then able to use the stronger T-5 yoke( has more splined area than AOD yokes)on your tranny, so you can use that stronger engine. Also makes the swap easier if you already are using an AOD. And then you dont have to use the less known, more awkardtransmission name of 4R70W, either.
