I live up here in the SF Bay Area and my 68 Coupe is tinted 20% on all windows except front windshield. I have not been pulled over yet and the cops in my town (alameda) are *****. The previous owner never had issues either. I think most reasonable officers would not trip about it but you have to keep in mind that it does give them an excuse to pull you over. So its best not to drive around with large quantities of narcotics or while under the influence of drugs &/or alcohol.
BTW, I see homeboys in Oakland and San Francisco with limo tint on their front windows ALL THE TIME. And as far as I can tell they dont get harassed, even though they have systems that set off alarms and gold grills for teeth. So I guess it depends on where you live.
As far as whether to tint a classic...? It is YOUR car so do what YOU want to.

There's a certain level beyond which you can't legallytint the front side windows or windshield in CA, I just can't recall what it is atm. But generally it's no more than the factory tint, which is VERY light. Personally, I hate classics with tinting. It looks lame. The factory green tinting is enough. I used to drive my 67fb with black vinylaround in Stockton (100-115F summers) and I survived.

A little California tint law information for those who care:
HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN CALIFORNIA?
Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In California, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.
Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Back Side Windows Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window Any darkness can be used.
HOW REFLECTIVE CAN THE TINT BE IN CALIFORNIA?
Similar to sunglass lenses, some tinting film contain metallic elements that help in reflecting incoming light and reducing the glare and heat generated by visible light.
Front Side Windows Must not be more reflective than a standard window.
Back Side Windows Must not be more reflective than a standard window.
OTHER CALIFORNIA RULES AND REGULATIONS
Restricted Colors The tint color(s) of RED are not legal by state law.
Side Mirrors Dual side mirrors are required if back window is tinted.
Certificate Requirements Manufacturers of film do NOT need to certify the film they sell in the state.
Sticker Requirements No sticker to identify legal tinting is required.

Its 35% here in MD and all the rest is the same..

I think it'd look pretty cool on your car since you have the black stripe so it would keep the two-tone look. I was planning on tinting mine because even at 9 pm here my back is sticking to the seat.

Forget the tint, get AC! I'm probably in the minority, but tinted windows on classics look a bit out of place. Besides that, black vinyl is still hot, tinted windows or not. AC definitely takes the edge off. I had AC with black vinyl in a '65 and it worked nicely here in L.A.
