The main gear on an 8.8 has .8" more metal for strength. If you're getting rid of your 8", I'd just go with a 9". A well built 347 will rape that 8...

More than likely if you have a 289/302 you have a pumpkin 8. The only 8.8 I know of are on some newer fords, like the explorer. I had a friend put one in his 67 because he said it's stronger and already has the disc brake set up.

8.8's are a great upgrade for a smallblock. They're much lighter than 9" units, and much stronger than factory 2-pinion 8" units. They do require some fabrication (and often axle/brake swapping)before they will work in a classic, but it's not that big a deal. And on the upside, fox body (78-93) 8.8's are the perfect width for 67-68 Mustangs.

I've got an 8.8 housing sitting at a friend's waiting for me to build it. It'll easily hold against my 331.

so how do i find out if i have an 8 or a 8.8
Ford didn't offer an 8.8" rear in '68 - only an 8" or a 9" in high HP/stick cars. Of course, an 8.8" could have been installed by a previous owner. As stated before, if there is a rear differential cover (you'd see bolt heads as viewed from behind), then it's an 8.8". No bolts heads = 8".

+1 on what Starfury said.
An 8.8 is too wide for my 65, If I had a 67-68, I'd jump all over an 8.8. There are so many Exploders in wrecking yards with trac-loc 3.50-3.89-4.11 you can have a whole closet fulla ratios cheap. They are sturdy, even if ya break one your not out huge$$

its a 8 inch unless someone put a 8.8 in it .easy way to tell the rear of the axle is it welded on like a 9 inch nice and smooth the 8.8 has a bolt on cover like a gm or a dana axle.
