Default What Oil

For a dry engine thats going together with all new parts(rings berings..) What oil would be best to use for break in? Would a fully synthetic like royal purple Work better? Or would it be best to go with regular 30 weight? or does it matter?

Well, I see what your saying, but the first couple hundred miles is when the seals and rings nead the moast lube, i diddnt know if a full synthetic would be too slick.

Don't use synthetics during the break in period...your engine actually needs less lubrication during this period so the mating surfaces have a chance so seat against each other.

from what i have been hearing lately, shell rotela (still has zinc in it) is the best oil to use while breaking in the motor

I just had a similar dilemma, rebuilt my inline 6 about 3 months ago. one of the guys who helped me who had rebuilt several older motors before said to go synthetic, and we used castrol gtx 10w30 and that worked just fine. It runs great now that its broken in, and it didnt take too long either. Ive heard that using synthetic on a new motor was bad for it too, but I dont know how true or false that is. Either way its just oil, as long as its in there doing what its supposed to do I think any decision you make will be alright. oh, but definitely do not go royal purple at first, its a really good motor oil but definitely not good for new engines, wait until about 2 or 3 oil changes before you use that. plus its expensive, and you should change the oil sooner than you would on an older engine with more miles, at least that is my understanding

Personally, I run 10w30. When breaking in my motors, I'll run the recommended oil, no synthetics, change after 50 miles. Fill it with some more conventional and change it with 500 miles on the odometer.

I like to run Royal Purple in my stuff after break in though, I'm sure you'll be more than happy.

My oil routine is a little overkill but oil is cheap so I'd rather be safe than sorry. I've only helped build motors and thats what we normally do.

Now about the headers. What motor? What year?

302, its got 74 heads( so my engine builder says) its a 78' block though. I want to run a power rack and pinion stering.

So... ive got no clue what headers will work.
