Default weird problem 66'

I recently switched out my stock 4bbl. manifold for an edelbrock performer intake on my 66 289. Everything went very smoothly. I put back in the original thermostat which was in good working order before i took it out. The car way overheated. So I went and got a new high performance thermostat still ran very hot. Took out the thermostat ran on the cold line for about half an hour, stayed perfectly cold. WHat can be wrong? i follow the direction on the thermostat that says to radiator. any help greatly appreciated

The only thing I can think of is that maybe you installed the thermostat upside down.

Maybe you put the gasket on wrong or to much sealer. I would start with the thermostat. It could also be the wrong intake manifold for your heads. I don't see that, But it could be. Maybe something is blocking the water in the manifold. Its new , right. That don't mean that it is good.

upside down? i thought al long as you face it in the right direction it shoudn't be a problem. what side goes up than? and the water passages were clear on the intake. But the stock only had two water crossovers and the new one utilized the third one that the heads provide.

Did Edelbrock only offer only one intake? or were there 2; one for 2V and one for 4V?

edelbrock has several manifolds offered for 289. the performer, rpm performer (one i have), air gap, torquer series and victor series. mine is made for the 260, 289, or 302. I have a non stock radiator made by universal auto radiators. dont know if that could make any difference. and if you wanted a two barrel you put an adapter on the top that cover two of the holes.

they only made 4v for all their intakes except one in the victor series.

soaring what do you mean by upside down, upside down or do you mean backwards? because i didnt think it mattered how you turned it. Any one else have any ideas today im going to take it off clean it all up and put it back together. hope it somehow works right this time. Maybe i need a thermostat that opens earlier at some odd reason? i know my gauge isnt wrong because i can see a little bit of smoke coming off the radiator when it overheats so it is really getting hot. any way to find the exact degrees the engine is at. other than just putting a thermometer on it?

You could take your thermostat out and see if it cools.

Take a look at this sketch to see if you have yours installed this way. http://www.inct.net/~autotips/tstat.gif
