With the 302, stick with the 8" rear, it'll actually gain you some quickness over the 9" just by weight and how much power each takes to turn.

If you can hook up with a 351, you'll generally always be quicker, just because of the increased torque. And, the price difference between the two is pretty negligible.

i think modding a 351 will result in too much power.

and yes i said it.

TOO MUCH!!! ..

just like gothand said when he said a 351 was just not streetable compared to a 302.

but i see .

if you want street dominance you cant go wrong with a 351, or a 302, but im my personal experience for instant feedback off a stop light go with a 351 the torque is just that good. i've driven every type mustang thats been at the dealer and that my friends own, everything from a KB cobra down to the 170ci i-6 in the 1966 mustang. and by far a 351w was my favorite inside a 1989 mustang coupe. it was istant torque and get up and go, were as the 302 i found i had to rev higher to get what i wanted. as far as streetability, theres a guy running around town in an 800 rhp cobra and a 1400hp Nopi sponsored supra. its all what you consider streetable. personally i consider up to 750rwhp streetable.

when your at that... why get more ?

it doesnt really matter on the street ... you already cant be beat.

Most likey you are not going to see 500hp in your budget. I would say around 300-350hp. It doesn't make since if your car cannot handle it anyway. It sounds like you want to race from light to light. You want off the line torque. You want to smoke them tires! Get that Edelbrock kit and some 3.70 gears and you'll be grinning ear to ear.

My 347 is still in it's final stages. The builder is a friend and he knows I had bypass surgery and that I wouldn't be doing anything anytime soon. I brought him the new timing cover, water pump, and all the ARP hardware for the front of the engine earlier this week. The short block is complete. It's just a matter of bolting things on now. I did buy a windsor shortblock. I will brobably go the 427 route and save it for a back up. Imagine a stroked 427 with a supercharger.

To clarify, I said my 351W was not as streetable as I'd like it for what I want in my fastback. I did have that same engine in an '85 GT convertible and drove it daily 80 miles roundtrip to work. I had trouble putting all that low speed torque (394 ft-lb @ 3000 rpm at the rear wheels) to the ground without getting it squirrely.

FWIW, I'm also the same guy who thinks the Magnaflow exhaust it too loud and am going to change it out.

There's no such thing as too much power, just not enough traction
