ty remicks that brought up this engine

428 CJ V8
water cooled cast iron V8
4.13x3.98
cap 428 (7.0l)
4bbl carb
power 360bhp

then punch that **** out!!!!! you can laugh at the 04 cobra as you roll on by, and if you absolutely need more refr to weinand 8-71 s/c.
any questions?

I'm partial to Windsor strokers. Easy bang for the buck with a 408, and if you really wanna burn some tires, build it low compression and supercharge it.

you have to go for a 390bb and if thats not enough power you can always get a stroker kit and make it a 460

Thanks for correcting me, I knew it was either the 427 or 428 CJ that was just a factory stroked 390. And we all know that 360bhp is a lie from ford, they always underrated all their motors. They said the 69 Boss 302 had 290hp but it was really around 375hp, underrated for insurance purposes. All muscle cars were.

Go with a 393. Take a 351 and stoke it out, but only by 42 CI, that way you still have quite a bit of RPM range and can maximize things like taller intake runners and over sized valves. The 302 is out when a 351 is an option IMHO no contest. The 390 is a powerful torque building monster however pound for pound and $ for $ you can do so much more with less money and less weight by stroking a 351. If you max out the stroke on a 351 to a 427 or even 460 you will shorten the motors life and will reduce max RPM which means that your HP to cubic inch ratio will be smaller because a greater RPM max lends it self to more potential power.

I'm saying mine is an S-Code, which means originally it had a 390 in it. I didn't have the engine, and deemed it not worth it to put a big block in. Even if I had it, I'd probably store it somewhere and go with a small block.

ORIGINAL: remicks

390 and then punch it out to a 427, no replacement for displacement
Can a 390 be bored out that far?

390 has a bore of 4.05, the 427 has a stroke of 4.23,,,, that is a lot of "cylinder meat",,,

<<oops,, I made a posting error,,, the above statement should read:

390 has a bore of 4.05, the 427 has abore of 4.23,,,, that is a lot of "cylinder meat",,,

While I do not pretend to know, I have serious doubts as to whether a 390 can be bored an additional .18 (almost 3/16") of cylinder bore, (for most blocks it may as well be a mile). Even if this is possible, I would have serious concerns about core shift and the effects of35 years of water jacket corrosion>>

A 428 has a bore of 4.13, even this would require a .08 overbore, IMO, risky if not impossible.

"Though mid-year 406s and all 427s were cross-bolted main blocks, both were different castings entirely. In fact, the 427 block is a completely different animal because it sports huge 4.23-inch bores, unlike any of its FE siblings, using the 390 and 406's 3.78-inch stroke. This factor makes the 427 a deep-breathing, big-bore, short-stroke, high-rpm screamer. What may surprise you is the 427 block cannot be bored oversize (even a little) because these huge bores push the design limits of the FE block. When it's time for a bore resizing on a 427 block, you must sleeve it. There are no exceptions."

I got this info from http://www.mustangandfords.com/techa...e_quick_facts/ good info on the FE family of motors. Basically from what I got its says its the same block but it uses the same stroke as the 390 but its just bored to its limit. Using the same stroke as the 390 you don't hurt your rev limit but you have 37 more cubes to work with. When you are done boring it and equip it with the right heads and other equipment you can have a vintage NASCAR motor that puts out +600hp no problem. And yes its alot of cylinder meat, all of it.
