Automatic to Standard Conversion - Drive Shaft?
Though I'm still hoping for a decent, semi-cheap four speed to pop up, I found a three speed with two bell housings and linkage for a very reasonable price. I will still have to get a flywheel, pedal, and shifter.
To make a long story short, the guy told me that the driveshaft on the car now (automatic) will still be the right length for the three speed (or four speed). He also said the only thing that will change that is a switch from an 8" rear end to a 9".
Is that all true?
Thanks.

Don'tbet on it. Sorry for sounding short, withthe kids almost missing the bus when I was writing this,I didn't get to finish. Anyway, the sure way to tell is to measure if you can find someone with the same tranny-rear combo. I think that their may be some difference in the lenth of the two drive shafts, between the auto and manual's, but I'm not sure. Anyway, their should be about 3/4 of an inch of slip yoke if the shaft is the right lenth after the install with the weight of the car on the wheels. Also, the output shaft spline count will have to match (ie 28, 25, 31) the yoke. I thinkthe C4 and the Top loader 4-speed'shave a 28 spline count, and most of the the 3-speed's and the T-10 4-speed's have a 25. Hope this helps.
I have read that that is the case, but I'd check the FAQ to see if you can find out for sure.
I can't see where the "Don't bet on it" comment helps anyone, but oh well ......

yes it is true when I swaped the I6 for the 302 I have now I bought a 65 parts car for the motor. The 65 was an automatic car and I got my toploader 4 speed from another place. To make a long story short I used the driveshaft for the auto car with my toploader no mod needed.
i swapped mine from c4-c5 no mods as well, but the strentgh of the drive shaft isnt up to par, im trying to break mine, an excuse to get a new one
