Towing Question
I having a bit of a brain fart on towing my hopefully new mustang. Now I know if you tow an automatic transmission with the rear wheels on the ground you run the risk of burning up the tranny, also if you tow it with the rear wheels up the car will get a squirrelly on you because the steering wheel doesn't lock on the classic. My question is with a manual transmission. I cannot for some reason remember if just throwing it into neutral and towing it if you run the risk of burning up the tranny. If someone can clear this up for me it would be appreciated, thanks!
If you're not towing very far (less than 50-100 miles) just put it in neutral. If further, disconnect the driveshaft at the rearend and strap it up. Don't remove it or you'll drip tranny fluid/gear oil out of the tailshaft.
I'm going about 40 miles. I have the option of going on the expressway where the speedlimit is 70mph or cruise for a while at 55mph and then hit city area traffic, stop and go, what would be the better idea? The tranny is the 3 speed manual if that matters.
I was thinking of doing that but I was mostly afraid of losing the driveshaft with the car being on a down angle on the drive back. But I'm sure I can tie it something to secure it, my worrying is probably a little unwarranted. I'll do that, thanks for the help plainsman and TexasAxMan.
Its kinda sad but I was looking into the towing option to save gas money. Opposed to driving my v8 f150 back and forth new mustang back from downriver detroit and eating all that gas. Getting the full trailer doesn't make it cost effective anymore. The car is fully functional, the brakes just pull to the drivers side a little.
