A 9" would be the best setup to get IMO. Unless your building a beast, they will handle high hp well.

By "modern" im assuming you mean something like the SN95 diff you suggested earlier. That would be a 8.8". You would have to modify it to mount on spring perches, since SN95's used coils, and I also believe the overall width is incorrect. For your 9", the width should be 59.25" axle face to axle face, or there abouts.

You could also get a 8" as they are easier to find and cheaper. They wouldnt be as strong as a 9" but it depends on the hp/torque your planning....

Have you checked out Ebay or Craigslist? I see differential parts on there all ther time..

If your main goal is tracloc, you could just pull the centersection out of the differential and replace it with another unit that already has a locker installed. 8 and 9 " share the same housing, so a 9" center would slap into yours too(so ive heard).

Just make sure the spline count is the same for the axles (yours should be 28) and the gearing is appropriate. Mine has 2.73[:'(]

Not sure what the stock ratio was on yours, I guess there are lots of combinations from the factory. Im no expert by any means, but 3.50 gearing seems to be a balanced ratio for street and highway, but still with some umph.

If you want a great daily driver carb that you put on and drive, buythe 600 cfm edelbrock with the elect choke. Holleys make more power but you have to tune them to get it. I've had 5+ brocks and I love em!!

Do not put a 600CFM carb on a stock 289:-| Way too big for that engine. An Autolite 4100 would be the perfect match (at an overrated 480CFM), but an Edelbrock 500 would be great as well if you can't find an Autolite.

Overcarbing is going to result in poor throttle response and reduced fuel economy.
