For a couple of grand you can get a new Currie 9" with your choice of gears, and "Traction Lock", that is 100% bolt in.... you can get disk brakes on it for afew hundred more.

This is not everyones best option, but it is something to keep in mind while looking for a used axle and the associated conversion costs.

If your main goal is tracloc, you could just pull the centersection out of the differential and replace it with another unit that already has a locker installed. 8 and 9 " share the same housing, so a 9" center would slap into yours too(so ive heard).
Absolutely wrong, while they do look similar the center sections are NOT interchangable. I'd just have your 8" carrier rebuilt with the gear ratio you want and a limited slip. With a mild 289 you shouldn't have any problems with it.

Is this true? I don't think so but if it is, that'll make it a lot easier to get trac-loc in mine.

a 8 inch housing with not hold a 9 inch center section. if it did why would people spend so much on 9 inch housing, everyone would be driving around with a 9 inch rear. my friend has an 8 inch on his 69, the rear is completely stock and he has a 392 stroker with over 400hp. its held up fine but i wouldnt recomend it. and i dont think youd be putting out close to 400hp with a 289. i have a 289 with the 8 inch rear and im about to drop a stroker into my car and im most likely going to rebuild my rear instead of buying a new one
