I painted my 331 before I dropped it in. I think I used 3 rattle cans of Plasti-Kote Old Ford Blue. Can't recall exactly how many coats, maybe 2 or 3?

Heh, same here. 10 years later and the paint still looks good!
Just make sure to clean the block before you paint.
I used acetone. Wear gloves.

IMO just put enough paint to cover everything the way you want it covered. If it looks good after 2 coats stop. Applying thicker paint than needed to cover well serves no purpose other than to promote cracking, hardening, and peeling.

The thinner the better.

True,, Too much paint will just crack and fall off.. also, I learned this from the engine shop when I painted my motor: Finger some Petroleum Jelly onto your new freeze plugs before you spray and once the paint is dry wipe out your freeze plugs,, the paint wont stick and they will pretty and shiny for ever!!! I used the old ford darkblue hi temp stuff from kragen and it looks exactly what I wanted it to.. Now I just need new valve covers and it will be sweet! OH,, and I didnt use even half of a can on my block, I dont know how someone could use 2 or 3 cans, thats a lot of paint!

+1

I've painted all my blocks myself, including one in bright yellow, with polished or silver hightemp paint. Clean the block, I use degreaser and a stiff brush, tape it off (the vaseline is an old army trick, it works), and lay down some paint.

I also paint the bolt heads by poking them through cardboard and putting a light coat on them.

I painted my block and heads as a unit, and also painted the water pump and timing cover to match. It was definitely more than one can, and I layed it down with multiple light passes to get even coverage without dripping, so there was probably a fair amount of waste. I want to say 2 cans, I just can't remember exactly.
