Reman'd carbs. You're likely throwing good money after bad with any used carb that you haven't seen run, and will wind up spending this amount anyway.

EDIT: I wouldn't go below a 650, 700 or 750 would be better.

A 600 w/vac. secondaries will work just fine. I downsized from a 750 to a 600 on my 69 390 and it worked out great. And that was with headers, an intake and a 428 CJ cam. It became much more street friendly. Don't forget, the vast majority of 390's were produced with 2bbl Autolites.

here is the mathamitacal formula for a close size

CI X Max RPM/ 3456 =

(390 X 6000)/ 3456 = 677.08333 or in the real worl 675

The autolite 4100 carbs Ford put on these motors were 600 CFM or at least the one sitting inmy gasrage off of a 61 390 is

Look on Craigslist everyday. Or put a WTB of Craigslist asking for a carburetor. If you had to rebuild it go to your local parts house and pay $40-$50 for a rebuild kit. Make sure you soak the carb and blow the passages out with air. It might be a learning experience.

I recommend every auto enthusiast rebuild a carb. I actually find it enjoyable. It was one of the first things I learned to do on cars, back when I was about 13. Second thing wasn't so enjoyable, replacing the water pump (4 times because of bad ones) on my brothers '76 (?) Mustang II with a v6, that sucked.
