Where are you located at? How far are you willing to go to get the car?
I have to imagine you could easily find a project fastback on Craigslist for under $20k. Have you looked there?
Here is a project for $19.5k in NorCal: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/car/444845059.html
Here is a shell project for $10k (67): http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/car/446020594.html
The car you are looking for is out there....
Good luck!

you can buy the 68 shell from cjponyparts, they sell the 67 fastback shell and 68 fastback shell, 18k but if 19k is to much this might not work for you since it doesnt come with anything but the unibody

There are many ´68 FB Mustangs in Ebay and this might be near you

Buy it now 21k http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-...QQcmdZViewItem

This one is lot of work, but $ 2500? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/musta...QQcmdZViewItem

Usually ´67 and ´68 fasstbacks are expensive eaven if they are total project cars. That new body shell is most enpensive way to go. You have to buy everything to make complete car and that will explode your bank account. Has anybody calculated how much totaly new fastback will cost? I think roughly that it will take ower $50k and that is just parts.
