Yeah, it is an all out "hole" back there. Its small but it is there. Its all the way through so I want to do something about it. And yeah, I would consider this to be a temporary fix but whatever I do may not realistically be changed for a year or two. My timeline is quite a bit different than the wifeys when it comes to this car! Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I think I will sand that area down and get rid of the nasty rust areas and then see what I am looking at. I'd like to try that "Extend" stuff but have no idea what it is... Will it basically just seal up the metal and slow the rust from spreading?

While I am at it here... If I were to do the Extend, and fill with fiberglass, polyester, or all-metal...(which I have no idea how to do!)... would that be considered a more long term solution? Or is cutting it out and welding a patch in really the only way to do it right?

Extend is a brand name, it's a rust converter. You spray it on and it is supposed to chemically react with the rust so it will stop eating away.
Long term best would be cutting and welding. It can be a big job but rust is like cancer, I don't think you can ever really stop it so you cut it out.
Body filler ,whether it's plastic or other kinds are basically the same to use. You mix it with a hardner and spread it on. You can't use it to fix a hole however. You will need something there. Body filler is mainly for small dents as you don't want it to thick because it will crack. Fiberglass is fairly easy to work with and Wal-Mart sells a Bondo brand that is cheap. Buy some and practice on coffee can.
I hear ya on the wifey timeline thing too!
Good luck, car looks great!

I'm with you brother, my wife thinks the next depression starts tomorrow.
Between us we make over six figures, have no car payments and an $850 mortgage.
If I want to buy an airfreshener for the car I get a ration of schit.
So I've learned to be sneaky.

Thanks Tarafied...
I will get some of the Extend and bondo and get going on this soon. I appreciate your help. I am actually looking forward to working on cleaning up that hole. Take it easy and have a good weekend.
Cheers!
