I'm not saying turbos are bad, just that I don't like them. My original post was actually more of a jest:P I havebeen in a couple single and twin turbo cars (although none V8's), and while they're great with the pedal planted, I don't like the lack of throttle response, or the huge jump in the torque curve when the turbo(s) spool. I've also seenmultiple dyno videos of twin turbo V8's where the lag isevident, compared to NA and supercharged V8's. I like a predictable torque curve without having to wait for the engine to catch up with my foot.
There's also the fact that you will never need 11psi of boost on a street-driven classic with even a small V8. You're lucky if you can keep that kind of power from breaking things, let alone get it all the way to the ground. Sure it's more efficient than building a monster naturally aspirated small block that's barely driveable, but what's the use ifyou can't keep the tires from spinning half the time?
Plus, I hate turbo whine:P It just bugs me. Audible blowoffs bug me even more.
With a small centrifugal blower making 6psi or so on a mild 302, the power is a little more reasonable. Throttle response is instant because the blower is almost always making boost. The torque curve is much more linear. It's nowhere near as efficient, but you're talking about a classic V8. If you're going for efficient, you've got the wrong car
Honestly, I don't like power adders at all. I'm a NA person.Build a V8 right and it'll spin the tires when you want it to, be perfectly driveable, and have great throttle response. It may not be as quick down the strip, but I never was much of a drag racer, and I doubt most of the people here make it to the strip often enough to warrant any sort of boosted V8.
Feel free to pick on me
I just flat don't like turbos. Not my thing.

Like I said, the right turbo setup with the right engine will produce a no lag situation, if you're building for throttle response that is. Centrifugals are technically always making boost, but at lower rpm it's so low(1 lb of boost) as to not make a difference. I actually like Centrifugals for street cars because of the fact they build power gradually and at higher rpm, it makes the car more manageable, plus they have almost the same thermal efficiency as a turbo does. And who says you need to go to the strip to have a boosted V8?? [8D]Supercharging and turbocharging are a very effective way of getting a small engine with good efficiency to make big engine power. N/A has the win for sure on simplicity though, it's hard to beat a healthy engine with a carb for cost vs. effectiveness in a street car
Nah, I'm not picking on ya Starfury. But I do love the lightswitch that is the gas pedal, and how it goes from 300 rwtrq to 500 like, NOW. lol I am a little k\like you though. i like my BOV to make a whoosh, not that import whistle junk everytime you shifts.
Although I will admit I used to do the N/A thing and nitrous. But I love cruising around with 3.25 gearing and getting decent milage, not shaking my teeth out with a cam, and being able to spin the tires while going 65mph when I feel like it. No, I don't NEED that much power, but it can be a ton oh fun, and is usable at the track. I won't ever go back to another form of power other than this.

I have driven one turbo and one supercharged car. I cant really compare the two because they were in two different leagues. My old 4 banger was turbo charged and my dads 93 vette is blown. Both were fast but my dads vette had too much power(if there is such a thing) it was super squirly when you stomped the gas. He actually put it in the center divide of the freeway screwing around once and he drove it all the time. As for turbo lag I saw something on spike that had Banks on there saying that he has pretty much eliminated turbo lag. I didnt catch what he has done. I only caught part of the program. The lag sucked on my 4 banger and the turbo never really worked right. It almost felt like it worked sometimes and the rest of the time it was just whining at me.
My parents had a twin turbo Z car a few years back and it was a blast to drive. The only problem they had was people stealing it. I think it was stolen 3 or 4 times in the first year they owned it. Because to that I think they were happy to get rid of it. I will tell you what it is like to drive a supercharged car when I get mine installed on my 68.
well since theres a lot of "i heard", "i read", "i saw" comments with no actual experience in both, i'll put in my .02. I had a Paxton on my 349 stroker in my 65 FB, it ran ok, wasnt bad, wasnt good, but most of all, i wasnt impressed. After realizing im only seeing 7 psi at 6,400+ rpm and losing about 30 hp to the drag the blower put on the engine and crank, i wanted to try something new. So i went turbo, in a untuned stage it already ran better.I shouldve gotten some before and after dyno numbers, but o well. I dont feel any lag, its runs like a N/A 349 and one the boost comes in, you better have a headrest cus your head is planted in it.Right now its getting new heads and some ceramic coating/polishing
