Is this a bad idea?
Well if you decide to stay with a manual you can upgrade to the 5 speed t5 and install a hydralic clutch, there are alot of kits and aftermarket support for it. For the swap to an automatic I don't think I have heard anybody think of doing that. I can imagine it wouldn't be that difficult, you really would be removing equipment, the petal and clutch linkage. But if you decide to do the auto swap you should look into an AOD/AODE.
+1 on andrewmp6's idea of trading/selling your clutch linkage and clutch pedal assembly. There are tons of people that want to do an auto to manual conversion and you just cannot find that equipment anywhere now. Its one of those things where either you have it or you don't.
Auto's are faster for one. 4-speeds are cool, but I can see switching, especially if you live in a heavy traffic area. I originally wanted a 4-speed car, but found an automatic car and think I like it better.
