Default Carb Problems

Okay, i'm about to throw my edelbrock away and go get a holley.[:@] I was driving home today and my car started to idle like the fast idle was stuck. I pull in to a gas station and the fast idle, throttle, and choke linkages are all in the proper positions, not stuck, nothing looks wrong. i don't get it. i know i'm going to feel stupid when you guys tell me what's wrong. i mean could the idle screws have come out of adjustment that bad that fast? The only thing i can think of is that the choke is causing problems cause it's not hooked up, but usually when i turn the car off and start it again it idles back down.

If it is really stupid don't laugh at me, i'm still kind of new to this.[sm=insomnia.gif]

If it's an electric choke it needs to be hooked up

It's not likely the choke, as it should default to the "un-choked" position without power. But just to be sure, are you losing power when you accelerate? Also, my experience has not come across any idle mixture screws undoing themselves.

Double check all your linkages are moving freely, and that the throttle is returning to its original position. Assuming they are, I would check your carb for a stuck float. It sounds like you're getting a lean air/fuel mixture somehow. If its not your choke limiting oxygen, perhaps your carb is allowing too much fuel at idle. I don't think it sounds like a vacuum leak, but someone should be able to correct me.

Give us some more symptoms - or if you were doing any other work around the time the problem started. Good luck.

I just went through a problem with my 600 carb, and got some great advice from someoneon this board. I checked the obvious things first like the fuel filter and pump, but both were good. So I did as he suggested and took the top off the carb. It comes offfairly easy, just be careful not to lose the small clips that hold the choke and accel pump rods on. Mine had all sorts of crap in there, with alot in the float bowls. I have no idea where it came from since the clear filter I have neverhad anything in it? After taking all of the stuff apart and cleaning it with carb cleaner,my problem is gone and it runs great.

If you disconnect the linkage on the choke, you need to secure it so that it doesn't flop around while you're driving. But why do you have the choke disconnected?

As Joe said, take the top of the carb off and check things out. Spray some carb cleaner around to remove any gunk.

Another possibility is that your distributor advance is messed up.Increased advance at idle will cause a high idle situation.

I have an Edelbrock on my 331 and I have had zero problems with it in 12k miles.

I have an edelbrock with the electric choke. When I first installed it, I just tucked the exposed end of the wire in the ACCY fuse location. A few weeks ago, I put a flat end to cover the wire and tuck it between the fuse and the fuse box. Now occasionally, the wire will pop out of the fuse box and my car will idle up just like it is warming up. Same problem you have it sounds like. Hook up the choke before you start taking things apart. Many times, the simplest answer is the correct answer.

Thanks everyone, I rechecked all the linkages again after running the car and it turned out that the fast idle was jiggling around and sticking and causing the car to idle up, I adjusted it a little bit and hooked up the choke and now it's fine. Now i just need to figure out what's causing the dead spot in the throttle, but i figure a good cleaning and kitting will solve that.
Thanks again

Dead spot of of idle is either too much fuel or not enough fuel. to isolate: make sure all of the vac ports are plugged or hooked to something. make sure the idle mixture screws are properly set, make sure the accel pump discharge is correct, make sure the accel pump linkage is correctly set.
