Lets, just for the sake of conversation, say that somebody I knew left their key in the 'on' position while the car was hooked to a battery charger overnight. Probably about 24 hours worth.
I have the ...err, I mean, lets say that the person has the neutral safety switch out of the car at the moment also so it can't be started at the moment.
But I was just curious. Worse case scenario...
What damage could leaving the key on while charging the battery for 24hours do? Coil? Dizzy Box?

I ...uh... knew somebody...who did that in a '66 Corvette, but it ended up just fine. Nothing got melted or broken or anything like that. But I don't know if a Mustang would react differently or not.
What happens is the points will fry. If by chance they were in the open position, they would be okay. If the were close to being closed where an arc took place then they would be ruined.
Check coil - see if pool of oil around it - I heard if you leave the key on you can fry the coil, which boils oil in it, cracks open and leaks outl. Not that I would have any first hand experience at it. Points could be problem too.

No points. Dizzy II setup. No oil around the coil but it was hot. Not scalding hot, but hot. I'll bet I'm ok.
