How to Replace Crankshaft Seal on Timing Cover?
Replacing my timing chain and manual calls for a special tool for removing crnakshaft seal. Is there a way to replace w/o tool - also where tdo you put sealer on it? Appreciate nay help. thanks
Easiest way is to remove the crank cover and just pound it out from the backside. Getting ready to do this myself soon, since I"m putting in a fluid damper to replace the OEM harmonic balancer. Will also replace rear main seal (without dropping the tranny) while I"m at it...
Yup, socket on the front of the seal works fairly well. Just be careful to properly brace the back so you don't crackt he timing cover; they're not cheap.
BE SURE YOU LUBE THE SEAL WITH MOTOR OILBEFORE YOU SET IN THE DAMPNER and Torque her down...
Ask how I know .. After my rebuild, I somehow folded that seal while putting on the dampner (not lubed properly) got the engine in and running and it was throwing oil everwhere.. So, I had to pull the front of the motor apart again to change the seal.. Make sure you lube it, then torque it in and then tighten down the cover bolts that way it centers the seal to the shaft.. Thats what my haynes manual says, and it worked for me.. (the second time)
