Default Car Registration Question

What are the problems involved with registering a car that is from out of state and has NOT been registered in 20 years? Is it hard to get it re-registered in California 20 years later? Will there just be a lot of fee's or what?

Have fun with cali rules and fees I hear they are lots of fun, they don't make anything easy. The craziest law I heard about cars in cali was that if your car is over 20 years old the state will pay you $1000 to let them crush it, they think our classics are dirty cars only worth a grand. Thats why I love Michigan, really no rules on your car, can be as loud as you want and as long as you have somewhere to hang a license plate its street legal. And they don't even inspect what you register even to see if its real, as long as you have a VIN written on something to show them you are good.

Shouldnt be that bad as long as you have proof you bought it and the vin is clean not reported stolen.Id call the dmv or go there and ask if theres a inspection or not and what all you need to licenses it.Do you have a bill of sale or title for it.

Well we don't own this car we're just seeing if this car works out for us what kind of problems we could run into. I know when I registered my Mach there was no inspection or anything at all, and mine was about 6 months out of registration. However, I think 6 months is a lot different from 20 years lol.

Worst case we can register it with my grampa's address who is in Nevada which connor says gives no problems

well make sure you look into it before you make your move. im pretty sure NV is more lax on that kind of stuff but cant be 100% sure. i mean we got a truck a couple years ago that went unregistered for i think about 4 years and got it registered with no issues. good luck

I have registered cars that have not been in the system, all you will need is a bill of sale, you'll get temp tags and have to bring the car in later to verify the VIN. As long as the VIN is clean your in good shape. There should be no fines beacuse the DMV's data system is not that good at tracking vehicles that have drop off the face of the earth.

In Illinois I had to get proof (affidavid) that the car had been driven. I owned it for a while fixing it up. Then they wanted to know why I was registering it so long after I bought it. On cars you just bought they didn't care how long ago it was registered.
In Kentucky I just registered my 67 I have owned since 1990. I had a reciept of when I bought it and what I paid but they still made me pay sales tax on what they said it was worth (they looked in a book).
