HP Question
Stroking it in the beginning will feel very good. After a little while the rubbing friction will heat everything up, then after awhile it will make everything raw, unpleasant and wear out prematurely. In other words when you stroke a motor it will wear out faster due to the lengthened stroke. If you could get 300K miles out of a 289, 302, you could get 200K out of a 331, and 150K out of 347 for example, thats just an example because all motors will wear differently due to drivers, its just to give you perspective. And after you stroke to a 347 you really cannot rebuild.

but what should I look for when building. to make 300whp
so if i don't put a stroker kit on. I've had my eyes set on GT-40X heads but I want to know what to put all together to make my goal...

Personally, if money is no issue,I'd build a 331. In fact, that's exactly what I did with my 67fb. The 331 is more reliable and will last longer than a 347, but still builds more low-end torque than a 289/302 for better driveability with 300+hp. It doesn't wind up quite as fast as a 289, but it pulls hard all the way to 6200rpm.

What? That's ridiculous. Stroking a motor has almostlittle to do with being able to rebuild it in the future. If you max out the bore you won't be able to rebuild it because you can't bore it, but that has nothing to do with the stroke. If your block is clean to start with and you run a .010 or .020" overbore and a stroker kit, there's no reason you wouldn't be able to rebuild it again if you took care of it. Sure, the 347 puts more force on the cylinder walls and rings, but not that much so.

Doesn't stress the motor too much, but you still have torque and revs, and I highly doubt you'll miss the extra 16 cubes found in a 347. Whatever you do, just make sure your heads, cam, and intake match up, and make sure your drivetrain isn't going to bust apart on ya.
...On theotherhand,as it was stated there are some disadvantages.I have a 408stroker and I am not only going blind, but also my left nut is shriveling up like a fricken rasin. However, the hairy palms aren't as bad as you'd think if you keep em shaved....

You will get hairy palms, amd go blind......so Im told.

If you're building a stroker, I'd use a 302 block (longer cylinder) and use a roller one while you're at it.

yeah, but I've gottwo 289 blocks laying around the house
It's certainly possible to build a streetable 300+hp 289. Realize that you're going to sacrifice a little low-end torque and throttle response to build the high-end power you're looking for, but with the proper gearing it shouldn't be that big of an issue, especially with a T5.
With a nice set of heads (AFR 165's come to mind), a healthy cam, 600CFM carb,~10:1 compression, and full length headers you should be just fine.

what are the disadvantages of stroking it???

Yeah, but it's not necessary unless you wannt shoot for a stretable 400+rwhp. Strokers have advantages and disadvantages
