the best way to make a patch is to cut out all the rusted metal (as little as possible, but get rid of the rust)
then take some cardboard paper and form it over the hole, trace it then cut it out and use that as a template for your metal peice
it will take a little effort, but it can be done and shouldnt look to bad, and it will be all covered, so you wont really have to use any filler

I had to do this on my 70. I am out of town, but will send a fewpics of what I did when I get home. Either late tonight or some time tomorrow.
