Accellerator spring location?
I have the one barrel Autolite carb on a six cylinder engine. My accellerator spring has been in two different places. I don't think it's in the right location now. The spring I'm talking about is a tension spring. Currently one end is attached to the exhaust clamp near the exhaust manifold and the other end I forget where. Anyway, in this location, it appears to be doing nothing. Before, this spring was attached to the accellerator linkage at one end and the engine block on the other. Tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't the purpose of this spring to hold the gas pedal down just enough so that the car doesn't shut off? And, isn't the second location where it's supposed to be, attached to the accellerator/choke linkage? Thanks.
If you have the ability and time google or look at this site for links to photos of concourse retsos or original cars unrestored and ask for photos or search for photos and you will see what you need. Go to your nearest Barnes and Noble and buy or look at some restoration guides. Hope this helps , on my 6 i just hook up a spring to wherever it serves the purpose and yes the spring is to provide resistance and keep the engine at a smooth idle , also to keep the car from taking off at idle because if the spring did not pull the accelerator pedal back to idle position , your engine would be at full throtle all the time and you would be wearing out alot of brake shoes/pads.
don't have pictures and have a 2batterll autolite myself.
but the spring should be going from accellerator linkage to somehwere else. somewhere else is straight away from that linkage so when the spring is pulled it will close your throttle _fully_ at the same time this will cause your accellarator pedal to come back out to idle position.
If this spring is missing, your car will run at full open throttle once you press the accellerator and when you let go the pedal it wil stay there instead of going back to idle.
You can have this spring a bit preloaded so that it tries to close the throttle even further. There is an idle screw at the linkage, with which you can regulate where 'closed position' on your throttle is. Throttle should not be fully closed in idle.
Does that make more sense ?
Or show us a picture of your throttle linkage and the engone around it, so we can point out on where it should go (remove aircleaner before taking pictures) as otherwise we won't get to see much

Here is a pic of my carb and spring setup. Don't know if it is correct/original method but seems to work. Would like to see how original looks myself...

Yours is correct SummerofLove. I'm assuming when you hit the accelerater pedal, the end of the bar moves up. There are a couple different bellcranks used, so there are a couple different places the tension spring can be. Yours should be mounted on the exhaust clamp.
By the way, 1967inline6MUSTANG, I have a spare "Powered by Ford" valve cover I doubt I'm going to use. If you're interested, PM me.

Thanks to all for responding! Cogtx, your photo of the spring is EXACTLY the way mine used to be. At some point, though, it was moved to the exhaust manifold. According to mySAVIOReigns (see response above)the exhaust manifold is the correct place. Any body have any ideas why it may have been moved? On another point, have any of you ever had your coolant changed with a vacuum system rather than the tried and true method. This was done for me about a year ago and since then I maintain the car has not run right since. Could an air pocket have gotten in some how? or do you think it's just a coincidence that the engine was getting ready to start running a little rough. My engine was rebuilt summer of 1991 and I only have a little more than 10,000 miles on it. The car is always stored indoors. I have noticed oil pressure a little low lately. Might I need a valve cover gasket or valve job? Thanks again to all who respond.
