whats a good dizzy?
hey guys,
im almost done rebuilding my engine, i just got to put the rest of the out side of the engine back together and drop it back in to my mustang...
but i need a new distributer, and i i was thinking getting an MSD... but i thought i heard some where the MSD is a made by GM.. so i heard that you have to modify it a little bit to make it work.... im not exactly clear...
so some clarification would be cool....
BTW, i have a 68' 302, a slight cam, stock pistons and crank, but i put jackson timing gears in it.. i dont know if any of this means anything, but i dont want to give you to little information..

MSD digital e-curve is new, instead of springs and weights, it has a microprocesser and dials, depending on how you set the dials, that'll change the timing curve. The only mod I've ever had to do to my MSD was to put a steel gear on it when I went to a roller cam. I'm just running a straight mechanical advance dizzy on mine.
BTW, the e-curve also has a built in rev limiter. I think it's gonna be my next dizzy, since there's no springs to wear out or weights to stick, and it has the built in limiter. Very flexible modern dizzy.

You mean the e-curve? If Crane has a version of the same thing I'd go that route, since MSD makes you pay more for their name. [:'(]

So it comes down to how much you want to get for what you pay. But the Crane unit still has 9 electronic curves plus like 3 vacuum curves, so a total of at least 27 different curves, vs the MSD's 100.

You have initial advance and total advance. Let's say initial is 10* and total is 35*, that means at idle you have 10 and once the dizzy is fully advanced you have 35(so you picked up 25*). The curve is basically how quickly the timing advances, whether it's all in by 2,000rpm, 3,000rpm etc. General rule of thumb is you want as much advance as quickly as possible to get best power without detonating. Distributors need to be tuned as well, ESPECIALLY on a carb'd car, which is quite sensitive to ignition timing, if you want best performance. If it were me, I'd get a Crane Digitial Hi-6 box, and the pro-curve electronicly adjustable dizzy. It's 10x easier to adjust the dizzy by just turning a little dial on it. You can also adjust the vacuum advance curve as well, how much total timing under a given amount of vacuum, for more advance under part throttle, which gives better mileage. The Crane dizzy has 9 different curves of varrying rates and shapes, plus 3 different vacuum advance curve settings, and it's about $100 cheaper than the MSD unit(which has way more curves than you'd really need). You can also get the older style with centrifugal weights and springs, but the electronic version is going to be better all the way around, more reliable with a wider selection of curves. It comes down to how much you want to get for your money.
