Default Floor Board Cancer

Went to install seatbelts and had my first look under the carpet and there it was - rust. On drivers side the boards look and feel pretty solid, though the front has asmall sheet metal patch (aprox 8"x12") over a thin area with a few small holes. I wired brushed as much rust off the surface as I couldup front and backand used that rust- primer converter goop that turns rust into black primer.

The passenger side boards arepretty well shot.Soft in toomany places.

Q1. After perusing a couple of posts here, it seems like I should cut out the passenger floor boards and weld in new ones. I will have to get this done at a shop as I have no welding or metal bending/cutting experience or those types of tools. Are there any things that I should be on the look out for as I shop around for someone to do this? What types of steel should I uses (gauge / type)? Other options? How much should I expect to pay?

Q2. Since the passenger side is going to have to be redone, should I just cut out the driver side too while I am at? I was going to shoot some undercoat over the primer stuff and thought about beefing them up by screwing in some steel over them just as a precaution while my floor is exposed. Does that sound reasonable or should I just go ahead and get fresh steel all around?

Thanks for your thoughts! Neddles to say this 3-point seat belt conversionhas taken a lot longer and is way more expensive than I planned!!!

The only way to do it right so that it will last is to have them torn out and replaced. Everything else is stop gap at best. It will be expensive if you don't do it yourself. Unfortunatly rust on the old cars is like cancer in people. If you miss just one little spot it turns into a huge problem later on.

They make replacement floor pans, so you dont have to by sheet metal and form it yourself.

Here is some for example. http://www.mustangdepot.com/OnLineCa...floor-pans.htm

Your best bet would be to buy a wire feed welder and do it yourself! You will save a small fortune! They sell the floorpans at NPD and Laurel Mtn Mustang for cheap!!Its not very hard to weld them in!![8D]

1 piece floor pans FTW... i think the best ive seen on them is 499, but you dont have to worry as much on lining it all up correctly (save time)and it'll be good for another 40 years
