Default 4 speed shifter

hey all,i have a 65 with a bw t-10.the shifter has the #'s 2083 on the front and on the sideit says hurst competition/plus 446957.i want to make sure i have the right shifter for the car before i put the trans back in.ive had some shifting probs like popping out of gear when i let off the gas.im going to replace the linkage bushings which were worn and the syncros look good.the reason im in doubt about the shifter is that i got the car in parts, lots of aftermarket, and cant find any info on these#'s.thanks for any info al

that shifter is a universal 4 speed shifter and should work when adjusted properly and when using the correct install kit with most 4-speeds. If you wanted an original Mustang 4 speed shifter you would need to get something along the lines of this

as far as the problem of popping out of gear the only way that could be the shifter is if you are not getting all the way in to gear in the first place. Even though the syncros look good I would still think they are the prime suspect for popping out of gear. Syncros are funny little parts and if things are not just right you will pop out of gear.

If I was there in the garage with you I could probably help you set it up, but I am not familiar enough with hurst to be able to do it blind. My advise would be to call hurst and talk to them. They will knot only be completely familiar with the product but if you buy an install kit from them specific for the toploader the install should be a snap and the kit should come with instructions. worst case cenerio, go to hurs'ts web page and see if you can download the instructions for their basic 4-speed shifter. May be a little different, but as a whole the design has not changed much and the directions should be of some use to you.
