Default RE: worn out cam?

i have another 68 (good running) with a numbers matching 302 4bbl in it and i took off the drivers side valve cover to compare between the two. on the head, i saw that it had "302 4v" on it while the one that i am having trouble with has no stamping whatsoever on either side to tell you what it is. the good running 68 also does not have the torque-down rocker studs, while the one that's fighting me does have the torque-down studs. like i said in an earlier post, i don't believe that this car has the original engine in it. also, 77stang, i tried comparing the pushrods with the ones from the other engine and they are the same length but idk if that tells you anything. anyone feel like coming to cincinnati to take a look at it? lol

when youtook the Valve covers off did you in fact see the 302 or 289 stamp on the head?you stated that you were "fairly certain"if these are ajustable rockers then perhaps someone used the heads from the 289? and you got a lot of
mis-matched stuff going on, maybe 302 pushrods & lifters, cam with 289 heads, valves, springs etc,etc,.. or if the are none adjusting rockers then most likely has 302 heads and will have much larger steel rockers.

why not measure the length of these studs and compare. that could be your problem.

one car has torque-down studs and one does not so i don't think they would be the same anyway

also, i have tried using a flat washer under each rocker nut which successfully removes the excessive play from the rockers, but even with everything adjusted right, the car still runs terrible. i would think that would point towards the cam and/or lifters being bad becausr if they were worn excessively, there would not be enough lift or duration for the valves. does that make sense or am i not even close? i'm getting so frustrated with this car right now...
