Default tow dolly question

Hello all,
Understand the best way to tow with a car dolly is to pull the drive shaft... but would this apply if I'm only going about 15 mile distance, max speed 50mph for one 3-4 mile stretch? Would I be okay just putting trans (auto) in neutral? (it's a '65 coupe).

many thanks for your thoughts!

I would pull the drive shaft .You don't want it to jump in gear when you hit a bump or something ,it could do some damage to the motor. Thats what Iwould do.

+1 on pulling the drive shaft. Also, make sure the rearend has the correct amount of fluid and that the brakes are free.

Hey John, thanks for visiting MF.

1st choice would be to rent a car trailer rather than a car dolly. I'd guess there's probably $20 difference on a 1 day rental.

2nd choice would be to unhook the driveshaft at the rear end and pull the shaft. It's about a 15 minute job. You'll need to plug the transmission so you won't leak out fluid. You should be able to buy a rubber plug at an auto parts store, or use a heavy duty ziplok bag duct taped very tightly around the tail cone.

+1 on the plug,,, i towed mine on a car dolly and put a bag and taped the crap out of it and it still just leaked every bit of fluid out of it!but i agree with everyone else and pull the driveshaft!

Thanks for the advice guys. Sure wish I could get my hands on a full trailer, but I might be stuck with the dolly though.

Sorry to sound really noobish (I am what am though!)... but would it be possible to avoid dropping the shaft if the car was running during the tow?Just trying to rule out simple possibilities that cross my mind!

thanks again!
