I love the 460. We used them in E 350 Ambulances before 87. For a 4 ton+ truck, they did a great job and lasted us well over 200k with no issues. Of course the mileage was only about 6 to 8, but they would pull their weight very well. Add some performance mods and putit in a 3000 car and wow. It will be a Rocket. I think you will need to look at the 67's and up. The 65 and 66's are 2" smaller (may require shock tower removal). You may want to look at what they did to the Boss 429's, by notching the tower to gain some much needed room. Also, youmay wanta larger fuel tank.

67-71 fits fine like everyone is saying, but dont waste time with the motor mounts, if you use a motor plate to drop the 460 down and back slightly closer to the fire wall clearance will not be as much of an issue. but your really gonna have to make sure your frame is straight and can hold up to the torque. other than that you'll tearing pavement.

bigblockfox.com

check those two sites out they have the most knowledge about the 385 series motors.

If youuse a Heidt's mustang II suspension kit you can put a 460, 4.6 DOHC, or anymotor in any mustang. Here are some picture of my 66 mustang with the heidt's kit being installed.
And the car will handle better with this suspension then it ever has!
