Default Carb and intake recommendation

I've got a 289 with Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, Crane Cams rocker arms, Comp Cams cam and lifters and a 2.5" Magnaflow exhaust. These parts were all "inherited" by me from my cousin after he decided he didnt want to build his 68 with a 302 anymore and get a camaro instead. He's more of a car guy than i am and he's been doing all of the work on the car with me.

I do need a carb and intake though as its one of the things he didnt get. Theres a Weber carb and intake on it rite now but i'm getting really bad gas mileage with it and my cousin has a buyer for those parts so iwanna get rid of them and get something simpler and easier on my wallet at the pump. I'm getting around10 mpg give or take. What carb and intake would you recommend for this set up??

I want something that will go well with the rest of the parts that i have. I dont know much about engines but i'm learning everyday. I've heard that too big of a carbis bad,too small of a carb is bad. I've read about how they can be adjusted and ones that come ready to go out of a box that dont need to be tuned. I want something i can drop in and not worry about (for now until i understand how to tune a carb). I have looked into the Edelbrock Performer / Performer RPM intake. I read that the Performer is more of a stock replacement and to go with the Performer RPM instead. I spoke with a guy at Edelbrock who recommended aThunder Series 650 cfm carb. Is that too big?? I did a search on that carb and found a post where someone said it had bad throttle response and that Edelbrock is pushing those carbs on to buyers cause its more expensive. I've also read on here that some people use Holley carbs with this intake.

There's a lot of info on this site and i'm kind of lost rite now as to what to get. What would you recommend to a newbie like me who is just getting into cars and engines?

What cam is in it? Need to know what the rpm range on the cam is to know what intake will go with it. And what's the compression?

i would think a good combo would be a performer rpm intake along with a holley street avenger carb 670cfm, should make a real good runner, i used this same combo on my 68 coupe with a 5 speed and 411 gears, that was a fun street car

by the way my engine combo was a 306 with flat top pistons, rpm heads and intake, motorsports x roller cam with 542 lift, with the street avenger carb and it needed very little adjustment out of the box, and i actually got almost 14 mpg if i kept my foot out of it, but what fun is that, with super 40s the little bastard flat out screamed.

You have a weber setup? Are you kidding? Don't let go of that thing until you do some research and figure out how much it's worth. If it really is a weber setup, you can probably sell it for a serious chunk of cash and use it...well, for a lot of different stuff:P

im wondering if his "weber" wetup is really a carter/edelbrock since they have a weber casting mark on em.

if your wanting gas milage, stick with a 570-600 cfm carb - but with your heads and what i'll assume to be a decent cam you could easily use a 625 and you could get away with a 650 if you tune it right.

using a 570-600 will probably work out the best for you though

I would go with a 570-650 CFM range. I wouldn't go with anything bigger than a 650 IMO. And as stated before, go with the Edelbrock RPM or RPM Air-Gap manifold. And you will be good to go.

Without knowing the details of the engine, no carb sizing will be accurate. If you can actually use that 2.5" exhaust, a 650-700 would work. But, I'm betting the exhaust is larger than the engine needs, too.
