Default Torque setting question

Hello again guys and a very happy new year!!

Just had a question; when my workshop manual gives a torque figure such as 50 lbft to 90 lbft...what does that mean?

Someone mentioned to me that it means that you can torque the bolt to any figure between those two limits. Somehow I dont agree with that...I could be wrong....anyone?

Thanks

Yes, it is just the range in which the bolt/nut must be torqued. So a minimum and maximum torque allowed. But its usually a specific number.

Happy new year to you as well.

God Bless,
Brian

yeah anything in between the two numbers is ok.

curious, what is that torque spec reffering to? 50-90 seems like a huge range. lug nuts?

Yep! (I am a F-16 Fighting Falcon mechanic) and the range is min and max. Generally i torque to max.

USAF Training:
Before using the torque wrench - at its lowest setting - let it 'break' on a tight bolt three times. Then set for applicable spec torque.

Be careful to not drop it.

Store at its lowest setting.

Don't use it to break a bolt loose (like, DUH!).
