Default 5.0 v.s. 351 in a '69 mach 1

I have a '69 Mach 1 we are doing a resto mod with.We just picked it up form the soda blasters today. It is a factory ac, ps, disc brake351 4 speed car, nothing we are doing to the car will keep us from ever putting it back to an all original restoration. We are building this car for my wife as a weekend/show car. So we are putting a RandallRack power unit and an automatic (she had back surgery a few months ago). I have a rebuilt .40 over 351 and a good '91 5.0 with an auto hooked up and all the harness and computer to go with it. Which would you all go with?

I would go with the 351 since thats what it came with and will be more correct. You have another .8 liters with that engine, and so much can be done to it to make it really great. I'm not too big on the 5.0's but a lot of people are doing it. But since mach 1's only came with a 351 and up, I don't see why you would want to downgrade your mach 1 to a 5.0, even with its fancy fuel injection and whatnot.

just my .02

why not convert the 351 to efi. I know some one has to make a bolt on kit. I have seen some Holley kits in magazines before.

not true

maybe in 71 but definatly in 72 you could get a mach with a 5.0

I would go with the 351. If you are going to rebuild it, you might as well stroke it.

No sir, I am correct. I'm talking about his year, 1969, and considering I have one I know a lot about them. For the 1969 model mach 1's the base model engine was a 351 windsor 2 barrel. However I'm sure you are correct about the 72's having a 302 option for mach 1's considering the oil crisis and new emission standards...

no replacement for displacement.......go the 351w or if on a budget you can do a 393-408 for almost the same money as the 351w. I started with a 289, built it then went a 351w huge difference, now I built a 408 its even more than going from the 289 to the 351w.

A good built 351w is a good starting point, you can always add a blower or turbo as well, a 351w is the smallest i would go in a 69-70.
50 cubes in a like for like build is worth 50hp/tq and then some and a 351w can get great mileage too.

my 67 408 vert http://htwheelz.smugmug.com

There are about 101 replacements for displacement, however since you have a 351 build a 351. It's a bigger, stronger block that will make more power.
