Default Changing out rear

Currenty in the process of building my 67' 289. I have recently just put elderbrock performance pack (heads, cam, manifold), mallory distributor, Holley 4 bl 600 carb, Headman long tube headerswork done and am currently in the process of putting on Flowmaster 40s exhaust and had questions about posi trac and gears.

First let me start by saying engine work was done to add some extra horses and by no means am looking for stock performance but rather a nice weekend driver that can get up and go. Question is do I really need to get posi trak and change out the gears if I'm not looking to drag race anyone and if I did add this what is the reason in getting this done. Sorry this build started off as just trying to add a little hp (maybe a 4 bl carb and some headers) for a nice weekend driver and somewhere along the line theproject got bigger and bigger and now I'm hearing all these other things that should be done. Please help as I'm don't have much prior car knowledge.

Default RE: Changing out rear

i wrote a long writeup and hit back before i could enter it and now im [:@]

short version

higher (numberically) gears means more acceleration, will effect top end driving (highway) cause it increases RPMs

limited slip will put power to BOTH wheels not just one like your open rear end does now.

i am SO mad. the response i had was very good... oh well. Find out what gear you have now (look at id tag on the rear end) and let us know.

You certainly don't need a limited slip. Get the car up and running, drive it for a while. If you find yourself doing lots of one wheel burnouts consider a limited slip.

If you find yourself wanting a little more pull off the line, go with some lower gears.
