Economical 1968?
Howdy, Ive been considering buying an old 1968 Mustang. Its the 200 6-cyl with an auto tranny but have been considering gutting it (it needs to be completely redone, everything) and dropping a more fuel effecient, newer engine into the bay with a possible manual tranny? I was thinking perhaps the 6 banger from the fox body or maybe a small v8? If anyones done this, know of any guides or anything that could help Id really appreciate it. My goal is to fix the car up to eventually be my everyday daily driver, and I understand its a ford and it will suck on some gas but I would like to do everything i can to help that. Thanks

why don't you do a 5.0 efi swap. you should be able to get 17city 25highway, easily,if you do it right. add a aod or t-5, t-5 being my favorite, but that's cuz I like sticks. and if your looking for fuel efficency then put like 2.50's in the rear end, not much power, but they should work for you

using a 5.0 (302) engine out of a newer mustang with electronic fuel injection (efi). JamesW could really help with that. aod is automatic overdrive, so an automatic transsmission with overdrive gives you the advantage of an extra gear for better fuel economy. with the 5.0 you could look at having 200-300 horses with a decent amount of fuel economy.

engine and tranny fit fine. you can fit up to a 429 into a 68 if I remember correctly, and a new transmission needs a crossmemeber/conversion kit, couple hundred dollars. I haven't looked at the aodconversion kits, I like my stickshift andI'm putting a t-5 into my 64.
Do some research you'll find plenty of information floating around. but as I said JamesW has done an 5.0 HO conversion and would be able to give you alot more information than I can. But I'll help as much as I can

If you put a v8 in you are gonna have to upgrade a lot more stuff: suspension, brakes, lugs, etc. I would say to stick with the i6 cuz you would get good mileage but you can still get some performance upgrades to make it fun to drive.
