Default idle RMP's

What should I set my idle to. I have a 289 manual with a agressive cam. It was set to 800. I installed a vintage AIR a/c kit in it. The A/C man set the idle to almost 1000. It drips down when the A/C is running but when it is off and the choke is open it is almost 1000. I think it is too high. Should I set the idle speed with the A/C running or off and what should it be?

I'd set it as low as you can get it with the engine at operting temp and the a/c on.

Mine is set to 750 with AC on and about 950-1000 with AC off. Much less and it stalls with the AC on, but that is going to be different for every engine depending on the cam specs and carb size.

Might be able to adapt a later model A/C solenoid to open the throttle a little when the a/c compressor is running....

Something I might need to consider for the 66 once I get the a/c up and running.

I was thinking about getting the a/c solenoid. I guess I will have to leave the idle where it is until I get the solenoid. Its about 750-800 with the a/c on now.

yes it opens the throttle when the a/c is on. It attaches to the same lead the compressor clutch

I found one for my Holley 4150, but do not see one for Edelbrock carbs.
