The engine seems to start fine but when I put it into either drive or reverse it hesitates when I press the gas too quickly. When its in park the engine revs up fine with no problems. When it is in either low or the single smaller dot "starts in second gear" drive it accelerates better. All my plugs are all rotated one over on my distributor cap but i checked the timing and it looks fine. It idles fine too.

I didnt rotate the plugs over thats how they came when I bought the car. The pervious owner probably did that because it still has the metal tubing for the timing advance so its hard to adjust the timing.

Does anyone know whats wrong or what i shoudl try?

 

Carbureted? If the ignition timing is correct, then it's most likely an improperly tuned accelerator pump curcuit. Too much or too little fuel from the pump shot and the car will hesitate/bog/cough/sputter/backfire/stall etc.

 

i had that same problem and it was my mechanical advance limiters. do you have a stand alone electronic ignition?

 

yes its a completely stock 289 with a 4bbl

 

Check for proper choke operation.

 

check the points gap. I was having the same problem, if I am understanding it right, and i think it was that.
