I would go with a Holley 570 Street Avenger Carb.

I would stay away from the Demons (too much money) & the Edelbrocks (they suck) "IMO" of course. This way you have a good all around carb, so if & when you make additional mods you'll still be covered. So far you say it's a stock 289 with 302 heads. I hope future mods at the very least will include headers with 2.5" exhaust with H-Pipe & mufflers (Flowmasters) of your choice. That's at least the basics at this point.

The 600 holley I had on the stock 302 (now torn down) was to much carb. I plan on a webber setup like the one in the pic below on the 347 I am planning.

you need to send me a PM so we can discuss whats currently on your car.... i need a bigger carb, you need a smaller carb.

if yours is in good shape we may be able to strike a deal.

and a 480 autolite or carter 500 is too f*cking small for a 289/302 if your wanting to go vroooooooommmmmm. 570-625 covers about 90% of 5ish liter motors on the street, and even alot of the 350/351's running around.

Just an FYI, the 3456 used for carb calculations is purely derived from the volume of the engine over time. It isn't just a popular number. Do the math, and you'll wind up with the same number.

VE is a measure of the efficiency of the system, hence the efficiency in "Volumetric Efficiency." Due to the physics involved with fluid dynamics, it's very easy to get 100+% efficiency from a system. NASCAR teams take advantage of fuild dynamics to a high degree, where most stock systems are not designed/tuned quite as well.

Back on topic, I'm running a 650DP on a 302, and I use every bit of that carb...even with "stock" 302 head castings.

Some people may not like them, but Edelbrocks do not suck. They're not the most adjustable carbs and therefore not the best for strip performance, but they're very easy to tune, don't leak like Holleys tend to (no fuel running through gaskets), and don't have power valves to blow out.

I have a 600CFM Edelbrock on my 331 with a Comp Cams Magnum 280H and some built '68 heads and it works great. Took a couple months of driving and a calibration kit (which everyone who has one needs anyway), and a little more tuning aftera cam swap, but it runsgreat now. I'll probably think about switching to a 625 or 650 Holley design (Holley, Demon, Proformer, etc) when I upgrade heads, but there's nothing wrong with the Edelbrock for now.
